Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a base fixed to the barrel. The original rear sight was cut off and the base remains screwed into the barrel. The rear sight is a receiver/tang mounted adjustable aperture. 

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, semi pistol grip, schnabel forend, and a serrated metal buttplate. The wood shows moderate wear with scattered pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The wood finish has blemishes on the left side when it was refinished. This furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with light fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The metal shows scattered wear marks, surface scratches, and spots of freckling. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This rifle presents in very strong overall condition, retaining approximately 90% of its original finish on the metal surfaces. The finish shows light, even wear consistent with careful field use, and the rifle retains matching numbered parts, an important point of originality for collectors of early Remington autoloaders. The stock has been refinished, which is properly disclosed, and it presents cleanly with correct contours and an attractive appearance.

Mechanically, the rifle is excellent. The bore rates 9.5 out of 10, showing bright steel and sharp rifling with minimal wear. The long recoil action functions correctly, cycling smoothly and locking up as intended. Overall handling remains solid and well balanced, reflecting the robust design that made the Model 8 a respected sporting and law enforcement rifle during the early twentieth century.

Historically, the Remington Model 8 was one of the first successful semi automatic sporting rifles and is closely associated with John M. Browning's pioneering long recoil operating system. Chambered in .35 Remington, it became especially popular for hunting in heavy timber due to its power and quick follow up capability. A 1934 production example represents the mature stage of Model 8 manufacture, just prior to its replacement by the Model 81. With strong remaining finish, a high quality bore, matching numbers, and correct mechanical function, this rifle stands as a desirable and historically significant example of Remington's early autoloading rifle lineage.
