Sights/Optics: The front sight is a triangular blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch that folds up to be used at greater distances, however the upper piece is broken off.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two piece wood in the standard carbine configuration. The wood shows scattered pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. The buttplate has heavy pitting and handling wear. The barrel band has a French crown marking on it, indicating a possible replacement. There is a crack starting at the left rear of the forend. There is a notable gouge in the right side of the wrist. The left rear of the stock is marked with a faint illegible cartouche. The LOP measures 13.25" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The furniture rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is fairly worn. There is heavy pitting and erosion throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 3/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 0% of its finish. The finish has mostly worn to patina. There is edge wear, scratches, and pitting scattered throughout. The screw heads show light tooling and retain turnable slots. The markings are worn and difficult to read. Overall, this firearm rates in Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The E. Remington & Sons Rolling Block became one of the most successful military firearm designs of the late 19th century, earning worldwide adoption due to its strength, simplicity, and reliability. Argentina was one of Remington's earliest and largest military customers, adopting the Rolling Block system in the 1870s and receiving rifles and carbines chambered in .43 Spanish. The Type I Rolling Block carbines were later "transformed" during military service, receiving modifications to improve their service life and maintain them as effective military arms. This example is an Argentine Contract Type I Transformed Rolling Block Carbine configured with a 20.5" cavalry-style barrel, folding rear sight, and two-piece military stock.

This carbine retains essentially none of its original blued finish, with the metal surfaces showing aged patina along with edge wear, scratches, and scattered pitting. The two-piece wood furniture remains in Good to Very Good condition with scattered pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches, along with a crack at the left rear of the forend and a notable gouge on the right side of the wrist. The buttplate shows heavy pitting and handling wear, while the faint illegible cartouche on the stock remains visible. The barrel band has a French crown marking on it, indicating a possible replacement. The bore is dark with fairly worn rifling and heavy pitting and erosion throughout, rating 3/10. The rear sight is incomplete with the upper folding portion broken, and the markings are worn and difficult to read. The action functions correctly. Despite its wear, this remains an interesting Argentine Contract Rolling Block Carbine retaining its original military configuration and historical significance.
