Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into a raised post with protective wings. The rear sight is an adjustable ladder sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The carbine features a two-piece hardwood stock with a handguard. The stock has a straight grip and metal buttplate. The LOP measures 13" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are some light scratches and compression marks present. There are no chips or cracks. The stock rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore. There is some light stubborn fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. There are light scratches present as well as some light operational wear. The markings are defined. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. This rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Arisaka Type 38 Carbine was a shortened version of Japan’s primary infantry rifle, designed for cavalry and support troops needing a more compact weapon. Chambered in 6.5x50mm, this round offered low recoil and excellent penetration, well-suited for the Japanese military doctrine of the time.

This example was manufactured by the Nagoya Arsenal between 1923 and 1933 and remains in solid, all-original condition. Though the Imperial chrysanthemum has been defaced per surrender terms at the end of WWII, this rifle still retains its historical markings and integrity as a representative of pre-war Japanese craftsmanship.
