This lot consists of an original box of Winchester .45-70 Government folded head center fire cartridges, an iconic American military and sporting cartridge introduced in 1873 for use in the Springfield Trapdoor rifle. The .45-70 quickly became synonymous with westward expansion, frontier service, and big game hunting, and remains one of the most historically significant cartridges of the 19th century. Early folded head construction is characteristic of black powder era ammunition and represents an important transitional stage in cartridge development prior to modern solid head cases.

The two-piece Winchester Repeating Arms Co. box is clearly labeled with period-correct red label and typography. The box retains strong legibility with expected age-related wear, including light edge wear, minor staining, and a tear in a bottom corner seam. The cartridges are still a full 20-round count, arranged in the original configuration, and feature brass cases with visible folded head construction and exposed lead bullets typical of early black powder loads.

The cartridges show expected age and patina, including oxidation to the lead projectiles and tarnishing of the brass cases, consistent with long-term storage. These are highly collectible as early Winchester-manufactured .45-70 cartridges and represent a desirable example of Indian Wars-era ammunition.
