Sights/Optics: The front sight is a raised post dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a Mossberg Microclick S-100 peep sight.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is wood with a straight comb, semi-pistol grip with finger grooves, and a serrated metal buttplate. The green and red safety indicators are present in the top of the wrist. The buttplate shows light wear mainly around the edges. The furniture shows light wear with some scattered pressure dings, surface scuffs, and other blemishes. Most notable are two cracks running from the trigger guard/finger grooves on the right side, and another running from it on the left side. The LOP measures 13.5" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips. This furniture rates in Good-plus condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished, likely Arsenal Refurbished

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is lightly worn with stubborn fouling. There is light erosion in the bore towards the muzzle. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its current metal finish. The finish is very strong only showing a few scattered scuffs and scratches. The bolt shows normal operational wear and some light oxidation spots. The screw heads range from lightly tooled to moderately tooled and retain strong slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as refurbished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a high condition example of Mossberg's U.S. military training rifle, showing approximately 98% of its nonoriginal parkerized finish. The parkerizing is even and well applied, giving the rifle a clean, uniform appearance while clearly differing from the original blued finish these rifles were issued with. The long 26" barrel provides the classic military trainer profile and an excellent sight radius, contributing to the rifle’s steady, deliberate handling.

The Model 44US was produced during World War II as a U.S. military training rifle, widely used by the Army, Navy, and other services to teach fundamentals of marksmanship using economical .22 LR ammunition. These rifles played an important role in preparing servicemen for duty rifles while conserving resources. Even with its refinished metalwork, this example remains a desirable representation of a WWII era American military trainer.
