Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, straight wrist grip, 9-rib forend, and a checkered smooth metal buttplate. The buttplate shows patina and moderate handling wear. The furniture shows pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. Many of the blemishes have been sanded over and refinished. The LOP measures 13.5" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are two cracks running from the upper tang and one running from the lower tang. The furniture rates in Fair to Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is grey and the rifling is worn. There is mild pitting throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 10% of it's original finish as most has turned to patina. The finish shows edge wear, scratches, patina, and small spots of oxidation. The screw heads are lightly tooled and retain turnable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Marlin Model 27-S was manufactured between 1910 and 1932 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Built on a sturdy pump-action design, it offered hunters a fast-cycling alternative to the lever-action rifles that dominated the era while retaining the quality and reliability for which Marlin was known.

Chambered in .32-20 Winchester with a 24 inch barrel, this rifle is configured for one of the classic sporting cartridges of the early 20th century. The .32-20 Winchester earned a reputation as an excellent small game and varmint cartridge while remaining capable of taking deer-sized game at modest ranges. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5 out of 10, showing moderate wear consistent with age and use. The action functions correctly.

The furniture rates in Fair to Good condition with honest handling wear and age-related marks. This rifle retains approximately 10% of its original metal finish, with the balance having worn to an even patina over the course of its service life. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition and stands as an increasingly scarce example of Marlin's early slide-action centerfire rifle chambered in the classic .32-20 Winchester cartridge.
