Markings: The water table is marked, "RE53592 / T”.  The sides of the receiver are marked, "L.C. SMITH”.  The barrels are marked, "LC SMITH TRAP GRADE” atop and "CROWN STEEL / H. A. Co. / TRADEMARK” underneath.  The barrel flat is marked with the serial, proof marks, and "CHAMBERS 3 INCHES”.  The forend is marked with "FW 53592” and a patent. 

Barrel Length: 30” 3 inch chamber

Choke: Fixed:  Full / Full.  

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a brass bead set on top of the serrated solid rib.  

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stocks are two piece checkered walnut with a capped semi pistol-grip buttstock, straight comb, splinter forend and Decelerator rubber buttpad.  There are scratches and pressure dents throughout.  The checkering is semi sharp. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttpad. Overall the stocks are in Very Good condition.  This gun weighs 8 lb, 5 oz.  The drop at comb is 1 ? in. the drop at heel is 2 ? in.

Type of Finish:  Blued, Case Hardened

Finish Originality:  Refinished blueing, original case hardening

Bore Condition:  Both bores are bright with some faint scratch lines. There is visible erosion that has been partially honed.  In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate a 7.5/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 85% of its metal refinish.  There is thinning and a few scratches on the barrels.  There is considerable fading of the original case coloring.  The screw heads vary from lightly to heavily tooled — all appear serviceable.  There are lines dug into the extractor from the firing pins. Overall, this shotgun is in Fine condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly.  We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment:  The L.C. Smith Field Grade 12 Gauge Side-by-Side shotgun is a classic American firearm known for its robust construction and dependable performance.  Manufactured by the Hunter Arms Company in Fulton, New York, L.C. Smith shotguns were produced from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Production continued under different ownership until the early 1950s.  The Trap Grade model was a post 1913 name for the pre-1913 No. 1. 

The L.C. Smith Trap Grade 12 gauge is favored for hunting a variety of game, including upland birds and small game.  It is also used in clay shooting sports such as trap, and sporting clays, where its balance and handling are beneficial.  Due to its historical significance and quality construction, the Trap Grade model is highly sought after by collectors.  Well-maintained examples can hold significant value and are often appreciated for their craftsmanship and historical value. 

The L.C. Smith brand is synonymous with American shotgun manufacturing excellence, and the Field Grade model remains a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized the company's products.  This one, with a 30” barrel and choked F/F would grace either traditional pheasant hunter’s or a connoisseur of fine shotguns collection.
