Sights / Optics: The barrel is cut for a front sight which is not present. The receiver is drilled and tapped with a one-piece base and rings holding a Lyman Alaskan All-Weather 2.5x scope with blunt picket post and cross wire reticle. The scope has minor wear in the body and fairly clear glass.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood has a pistol grip, nose cap with bayonet lug, stacking loop, barrel band, two sling loops, two through bolts, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. A tube with pull-through and oiler is in the compartment. The left of the stock has an RIA/FK arsenal rebuilt stamp. The wood shows scattered scrapes, scratches and compression marks. The LOP measures 13 1/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has punch-marks for added grip, showing wear around the edges and scattered surface oxidation. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp two-groove rifling. There is some scattered minor erosion in the bore. The bore shows an ME of 1+. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8+/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its current metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There are some nicks, scuffs and scratches, most notable on the bottom metal. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good-plus condition as refurbished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: When the United States Military entered World War II in 1941, there were no sniper rifles in military inventory. Those developed for use during World War I had long since been disposed of. On the Eastern Front, Soviet troops deployed thousands of sniper rifles to great effect. The British and Canadians resurrected World War I-vintage sniper rifles and were using them to good effect in Africa. U.S. forces needed a new sniper rifle. The U.S. Army's Ordnance Department decided that a sniper rifle could be made quickly based on the Model 1903A3, just beginning to come off the production lines at Remington. By the end of 1943, the new Model 1903A4 sniper rifle began to reach front line troops. The new sniper rifle was essentially a modified Model 1903A3. 1903-A4 receivers are marked "MODEL 03-A3" so that any rifle rejected as a 1903A4 Sniper could be used as a service rifle. WWII Remington Sniper rifles are highly valued by collectors due to their relatively low production numbers and their contribution to the war effort.

This Remington Model 1903-A4 Sniper Rifle has nice Remington markings on the receiver, barrel and bolt. Its receiver markings are offset to read them with a scope base installed. The rifle is in 1903-A4 sniper configuration and has the correct serial number to fall within the 1903-A4 serial number ranges. It looks great and is topped with a correct Lyman Alaskan scope. The rifle was purchased through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, CMP, confirming its authenticity. The rifle was arsenal refurbished at Rock Island Arsenal, but retains a closely dated 9-43 Remington barrel. It is slightly odd that the barrel, for a sniper rifle, is the two-groove variety, but it is in quite outstanding condition. This 1903A4 Sniper will be a great addition to your collection.
