Markings: The left side of the top barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY St LOUIS Mo. & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN BELGIUM”, the right is marked “SPECIAL STEEL-12GA.-SHELLS 2 3/4” / PATENTS NO 2.203.378-2.233.86”. On the take down lever for the forend “14284S” and “T7”, the locking tab “14284S3”. On the left of the chambers both barrels are marked with proof marks. The left of the monoblock is marked “PO 14284 S3 FN”, “*” for the top barrel and “**” for the bottom barrel. There are more proofs on the underside of the block. The top tang is marked “14284 S3”.

Each tube in the super tube set is marked “6736 S72” the over barrel tubes are marked “O”, the under barrel tubes “U”. The ejectors are marked for each gauge 20, 28, and 410 and “O”, “U”.

Barrel Length: 26.5”

Choke: The barrels are marked Fixed FULL over MODIFIED but our choke gauge shows Skeet over Skeet. The tubes in the tube set also measure out to Skeet. We believe this modification was done when the tubes were fitted to the gun.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a large white bead with a smaller white mid bead. The top of the rib is finely checkered to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The high grade wood furniture is a two-piece checkered walnut set. The stock is a checkered prince of wales grip, fluted straight comb, with a brown rubber vented pad. The forend is a round profile non removable style forend. The LOP measures 14.25” from the trigger to the rear of the buttpad. The cast is about neutral, very slightly off, the drop at comb is 1.5”, drop at heel is 2.5”. The wood shows handling with hairline scratches, compressions and a few small nicks scattered throughout. There are no visible cracks. There are some small chips in the edges of the gloss finish next to the upper tang and one on the lower. The buttpad shows minimal wear and is still pliable. Overall the furniture set is in Very Good+ condition.

Type of Finish: Blued barrels, coin receiver and trigger.

Finish Originality: Original.

Bore Condition: The bores are very bright with no erosion. There are some lines from use and minimal visible plastic fouling in the forcing cones. In this writer’s opinion the bores rate 9.75/10. The tubes are mirror bright with almost no visible lines and barely visible plastic fouling rating 10/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The barrels show some minor scattered marks, minor thinning at the muzzles and of course the characteristic rub mark from the forend. The receiver shows some minor discoloration from age. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the shotgun is in Fine-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action, safety, and ejectors function correctly. The barrels lock with no play to the receiver. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This 1963 Browning Superposed Pointer Grade shotgun in 12 gauge is a rare and exquisitely crafted example of FN's finest work for Browning, made even more exceptional by its factory customization to accept the full Browning Supertube system. The 26.5" barrels have been professionally fitted to accommodate the 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore tubes, each complete with their matching extractors and all choked for skeet. These factory-fitted Supertube sets were an uncommon and highly sought-after option for competitive shooters who valued the ability to shoot multiple sub-gauges with one perfectly balanced firearm. Few Pointer Grades were adapted for this system, making this particular gun exceptionally rare and desirable.

As a Pointer Grade, the receiver features meticulously detailed engraving of pointing dogs, a pointer with a pheasant on one side and one with a duck on the other, done by Browning Master Engraver Waltrin. Notably, Andre Waltrin and his wife Nelly were both engravers for Browning, and their work graces many of the finest Superposed shotguns ever produced. The high-grade walnut stock features a checkered prince of Wales grip and a round forend with elegant lines and superb finish. In excellent condition, this Pointer Grade exemplifies the peak of form, function, and artistry, a true treasure for collectors and skeet enthusiasts alike.
