Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “Magnum Twelve” in script above scroll engraving, with “BROWNING” beneath the ejection port. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number “72V16906.” The left side of the barrel is marked “BROWNING AUTO-5 / * SPECIAL STEEL – 12 GA. SHELLS – 3” – 30” / BROWNING PATENTS.” The right side of the barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN BELGIUM.” The barrel bears Belgian commercial proof marks including Perron, ELG, and lion-over-PV stamps, along with a date code consistent with FN production.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a silver bead fixed to the serrated ventilated rib. The top rib shows clear serration for glare reduction.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are gloss-finished checkered walnut with a pistol grip and a ventilated brown recoil pad. The wood shows moderate handling marks and some finish thinning around the wrist and comb but no cracks or chips. The checkering remains defined. The LOP measures 14 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, with no pitting or erosion and only light fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains approximately 95% of its original finish. The receiver shows light freckling, small handling marks, and light edgewear around the ejection port and tang. The barrel retains strong finish with a few scuffs and scattered thinning. There is a visible bend or warp along the top rib approximately 4–6 inches forward of the forearm. This misalignment appears to affect the rib’s straightness when viewed from the rear and may indicate either a cosmetic warp or a structural issue such as a soft bulge. The rib remains fully affixed and intact. The screw heads are serviceable. The markings and engraving remain sharp. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition with the noted rib defect.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The safety, bolt, and magazine cutoff all operate as intended. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Browning Auto-5 Magnum Twelve was designed to handle 3" shells and heavy payloads for waterfowl and upland game, making it a mainstay in the blinds from the 1960s through the late 20th century. Manufactured by FN in Belgium, this 1972 example sports the classic long-recoil action invented by John Browning and features beautifully executed factory scroll engraving.

While the action is sound and the bore is clean and bright, this shotgun does exhibit a visual warp or bend in the top rib approximately 4–6 inches forward of the forearm. It is enough to disturb the sight plane and may impact accuracy or indicate an underlying barrel issue. A gunsmith inspection is recommended before firing. That said, this piece remains a collectible example of Belgian craftsmanship and would make a fine addition to any Auto-5 collection—especially for someone capable of addressing or restoring the barrel assembly.

Despite the defect, the overall finish and mechanical condition present well, and the gun retains strong collector appeal. If you’ve been after a Magnum Twelve with honest wear and solid bones, this one deserves a look.
