Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded post dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation u-notch dovetailed into the barrel. 

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is wood with a straight comb, straight-wrist grip, 10 rib forend, and a checkered hard-rubber Winchester buttplate. The buttplate shows very light wear. The furniture shows light wear with a some pressure dings, rub marks, and drag lines. There is one more notable scratch on the left of the wrist. The LOP measures 13.25" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. This furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued, Silver Line Motif

Finish Originality: Refinished at time of engraving.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp with some light oxidation towards the muzzle. There is light erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its current metal finish. The finish shows a few minor spots of freckling and finish loss where the forend rubs while cycling the action. The custom engravings present cleanly and look good. There are English proof marks on the left side of the barrel near the receiver. The screw heads range from unmarred to lightly tooled and retain strong slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine Plus condition as custom engraved.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a prewar Model 62A that has been custom engraved and refinished, presenting as a highly attractive example with approximately 98% of a nonoriginal blue finish remaining. The receiver features non factory engraving, clearly disclosed here, executed with care and restraint. The engraving is tastefully done with tight scroll surrounding fox and grouse scenes set off by silver-line border motif.

Mechanically, the rifle is excellent. The bore rates 9 out of 10, showing good brightness and well defined rifling with light wear. The action functions correctly and delivers the smooth, positive pump stroke that made the Model 62A one of Winchester's most respected rimfire slide action rifles. Overall handling remains balanced and deliberate, consistent with prewar production quality.

Historically, a 1938 Model 62A represents Winchester's rimfire craftsmanship just prior to World War II, a period widely regarded for high manufacturing standards. While this example is no longer in original finish and features non factory engraving, it stands as a well executed custom piece that blends classic Winchester form with tasteful embellishment. It should be evaluated as a customized prewar Model 62A, offering excellent mechanical condition, strong presentation, and distinctive character.
