Winchester’s Model 1903 was their first semi-automatic .22 rimfire rifle, but the need for consistent ammunition for proper function led them to chamber the rifle in their own proprietary caliber known as .22 Winchester Automatic. The Model 1903 was designed by Thomas Crossley Johnson, and around 126,000 were made over its production run from 1903-1932. Winchester also produced a unique “speedloader” for the Model 1903, which they dubbed the “gravity charger”. The user would load 5 rounds into each tube, insert the spring end into the opening in the stock, and press downward on the spring to release the cartridges into the magazine. This Antique Early 1900s Winchester Model 1903 .22 Win Auto “Speedloader” Gravity Charger is in Very Good Condition, with only some scattered finish abrading, patina, and age wear evident. Most interestingly, it retains approximately 80% of the original blued finish, sports a fully functional spring, and is stamped on the top of that spring with its patent date and maker, “-PAT. FEB. 3. 1903 -WINCHESTER- TRADE MARK-”. It measures 4 1/2” x 3/4”, and is a fine example of a rare, original Antique Early 1900s Winchester Model 1903 .22 Win Auto “Speedloader” Gravity Charger.
