"Rain, wind, and weather, hell bent for leather...", so sang Frankie Lane in his classic 1958 cowboy ballad "Rawhide". Cowpunchers on cattle drives, during roundups, and riding fence at the turn of the 20th century wore rugged leather cuffs to protect their wrists from rope burns, thorns, and barbed wire. This pair of Antique 1920s Old West Cowboy Tooled & Brass Studded Brown Leather Wrist Cuffs are in Very Good Condition, with some scattered scratching, crazing, and spot darkening around the exteriors, moderate verdigris to the back prongs of the brass studs around the interiors, and with some light overall stiffening and age wear evident. Most interestingly, they remain beautifully formed in the round, boast an incredible diamond like design of large and small silvered brass studs connected by elegant scroll tooling at the front and sides, set off with exquisite “Spanish fan” border tooling, and sport the original brown leather lacing along the upper backs. They are unmarked as to their maker, though date to the late 1910s, early 1920s, feature a brass “glove” snap closure at each lower back, and measure about 6" x 4".
