Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is one piece black plastic integral to the frame with checkering on the left and right sides. The bottom of grip has a lanyard ring. The grip has scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grip is in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright, it shows some light freckling, stubborn fouling, and discoloration. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: About 90% of the metal finish remains. The metal shows light wear from handling and storage. There are some light handling and storage marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this flare pistol rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions Correctly. We did not fire this flare gun. As with all used items, a thorough cleaning may be required to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This R.F. Sedgley made Mark 5 is a 10 gauge flare pistol that was used by the U.S. Navy in WWII. Flare pistols were important for naval commanders during the Second World War. With the US Navy heavily committed to fighting both in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during the war, it needed flare guns to coordinate operations. Whether it was an aircraft carrier or a destroyer, ships needed signal flares to relay messages, illuminate the battlefield, and coordinate SAR efforts to name just a few scenarios.
