An exceptional, historically intact three-piece grouping of United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) heavy body armor, as worn by bomber crewmen (pilots, co-pilots, and gunners) in B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators over Europe. This uniform lot includes the iconic M1 Flyer’s Flak Vest, the scarcer M5 "Seated" Groin/Leg Protector Apron, and the late-war M5 Flak Helmet. A premier, instant-display ensemble for any advanced WWII aviation or ordnance collector.

U.S. WWII M1 Armor Flyer’s Flak Vest:

The anchor piece of this lot is an original M1 front-and-back flak vest. Constructed of heavy olive drab canvas containing overlapping manganese steel plates designed to defeat low-velocity anti-aircraft shrapnel. The canvas remains strong with robust coloration and minimal age-related tracking. Features the prominent, original red webbed quick-release emergency pull tab at the waist buckle, fully functional for emergency ditching or mid-air bailouts. The classic cream-colored, corduroy-padded quilted lining remains intact on the interior.

U.S. WWII M5 Armor Flyer’s Groin & Leg Protector (Apron):

An increasingly difficult-to-find accessory designed specifically for seated personnel such as pilots and co-pilots. Features the distinct three-panel configuration: two broad thigh-protecting panels flanked by a semi-circular lower groin panel to ensure full mobility and protection when seated. It retains its upper attachment snaps, allowing it to seamlessly couple with the lower rim of the accompanying M1 flak vest. Canvas matching color and condition to the vest.

U.S. WWII M5 Steel Flak Helmet:

A late-war M5 variant standardized in January 1945, engineered with distinct hinged, oversized ear flaps to easily clear the large leather flying helmets and radio headphones used by USAAF crews. Features the accurate late-war rolled/flared bottom rim at the neck. The exterior shell retains the vast majority of its factory-applied anti-reflective "flock" fiber texture, which prevented bare hands from freezing to the steel at sub-zero altitudes.

Condition:

Vest & Apron: Both fabric elements are in excellent vintage condition. Canvas is clean with bold olive drab color, tight stitching, and normal field handling. Metal snaps, buckles, and quick-release components are present and fully operational.

Helmet: The steel body retains great color and flocking texture. Interior suspension frame is intact. Note: The chinstrap webbing has severed due to age-related stress—a very common occurrence with these heavy helmets—but the original components remain present for repair or static display.
