Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “HI-STANDARD / U.S.A. MODEL H-D”. The left side of the frame is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. / THE HIGH STANDARD MFG. CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. / PATENT PENDING / .22 CAL. / LONG RIFLE”. The front of the grip is marked “133366”. The right side of the frame is marked "PROPERTY OF U.S." with an ordnance stamp and "SS-222" etched. The top of the barrel is marked "PROPERTY OF U.S.A.". The backstrap has a very faded "1" mark in the finish (not stamped).

Barrel Length: 4.5” Heavy Barrel

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a fixed square notch sight dovetailed to the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered black plastic panels. The grips have some modest wear. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. There are some minor nicks on the bottom edges. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some subtle erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light thinning on the leading edges and a few scattered light scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. It has an exposed spurred hammer and a frame mounted safety. There is a takedown lever on the right side of the frame behind the grip and a slide release directly above the grip. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This High Standard Model H-D Military was produced during World War II, circa 1943 to 1945, and represents one of the most widely issued .22 caliber training pistols used by the U.S. military. Marked “PROPERTY OF U.S.” and chambered in .22 Long Rifle, the H-D was adopted to support marksmanship instruction, familiarization training, and economical practice during wartime production constraints. Its heavy barrel, fixed sights, and straightforward blowback design emphasized durability and consistency rather than refinement.

The .22 LR cartridge made the H-D an ideal training tool, offering low recoil and reduced cost while maintaining realistic pistol handling characteristics. This example retains strong original parkerized finish, clear U.S. property markings, and a bright bore with defined rifling showing only modest age related erosion. Overall wear is consistent with service use, not neglect, and the pistol presents as a solid and historically relevant U.S. military training arm from the WWII period.
