Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into a post. The rear sight is an adjustable elevator sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two-piece wood configuration with a straight comb, grooved forend, semi pistol grip, and steel buttplate. The wood shows light scratches and handling marks present typical of field use. There is a large chip present in the left side of the forend. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dark, the rifling is defined. There is no visible erosion in the bore but there is some stubborn fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear and mild thinning on high-contact areas such as the bolt handle, safety knob, and muzzle. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The pins are clean. The markings are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Kokura Arsenal Type 38 Arisaka is a prime example of Japan’s standard-issue infantry rifle during the early 20th century. Designed to chamber the flat-shooting 6.5x50mmSR cartridge, the Type 38 became renowned for its robust Mauser-style action, long barrel, and battlefield reliability across varied terrain and climate.

This particular specimen is well-preserved, retaining approximately 90% of its original blued finish, clear arsenal markings, and most notably, an intact Imperial Chrysanthemum. The Chrysanthemum, often defaced by surrendering soldiers, adds significant collector value and historical authenticity to this example.

With its original configuration, sharp markings, and functional mechanics, this Type 38 is an attractive piece for collectors of World War II-era militaria or bolt-action service rifles. Whether as a display piece or historical artifact, it stands as a testament to the rugged engineering of pre-war Japanese armament.
