Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JUNE 26.88. DEC.6.92. NOV.27.06. MAY 30.1911”. The left side of the barrel is marked “MODEL 90-.22 LONG RIFLE”. The serial number “699301” is marked on the bottom of the receiver and the lower tang. The letter “A” is also stamped on the bottom of the receiver near the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a fixed u-notched leaf screwed to the barrel. There is a Lyman aperture sight mounted to the top tang.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle features a smooth walnut straight grip stock and a grooved walnut slide handle. The stock has scattered handling marks, nicks, and scratches throughout, consistent with its age. There are no visible cracks or significant losses. The forend grooves remain well-defined. The LOP measures approximately 12 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the crescent steel buttplate. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: This rifle has a fixed tubular magazine beneath the barrel.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its original metal finish. The finish has wear consistent with handling and use over time, with some areas of thinning and patina developing. There are scattered small nicks and scratches, particularly along high-contact areas such as the receiver and barrel flats. The screw heads are lightly tooled but remain serviceable. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 90, designed by John Browning and introduced in 1890, was one of the most successful early slide-action .22 rifles. It was manufactured in various chamberings, with the .22 Long Rifle variant being the most popular in later production runs. The Model 90 was a favorite among shooters for its reliability, accuracy, and smooth cycling action.

This particular rifle, manufactured in 1926, remains in solid condition with a functional action and a bore that should perform well with proper cleaning. It retains much of its original blued finish, and its walnut stock and grooved forend show honest wear but no structural damage. These rifles were widely used for small game hunting and target shooting, making them a beloved firearm of their time.
