Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed and screw set to the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch elevator semi-buckhorn sight dovetailed to the barrel. The notch is fine adjustable for elevation. The top tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece walnut with a straight wrist, straight comb, capped forend, and crescent buttplate. There are light handling marks. There is a tiny crack in the top of the wrist at the end of the upper tang. The LOP measures 12 3/4" from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttplate. The plate has worn to white with scattered oxidation and erosion. Overall the stocks rate in Very Good overall condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blued, Case Color Hammer & Lever

Finish Originality: Original. Parts have been heavily cleaned and treated touched up with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The bore has been sleeved. The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 50% of its metal refinish. The balance of the finish shows heavy cleaning throughout with thinning on the leading edges, and intermittent oxidation and light erosion. The case color on the hammer and lever is completely muted. The action shows operational wear with some old gear around the bolt. There are scattered dings and handling marks. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1892 rifle and carbine replaced the toggle link action of Winchester's Model 1873 with a breechblock locked with two rectangular locking bolts that made it much stronger and suitable for the higher pressures of smokeless powder. It was designed by John Browning, and was sort of a scaled-down Model 1886 rifle, the first he designed for Winchester. The Model 1892 rifle was popular with ranchers and later was the rifle of choice for western movies and TV shows, John Wayne used both M1892 rifles and carbines in many of his western movies. The M1892 rifles again became popular in the 1980s with the advent of Cowboy Action shooting, as they were smooth and dependable.

This Model 1892 rifle with a 24" Octagonal barrel was made in 1906 and is chambered in .32-20 W.C.F. The sleeved bore is bright with very strong rifling and the action is smooth which means this rifle will make for a great shooter.
