Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Marble Sheard brass beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a "V"-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation. The rear sight is only finger-tight in its dovetail, it can be removed by hand. The top tang is drilled and tapped with a folding Marble tang sight installed, adjustable for elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth walnut with capped forend, straight grip, straight comb and steel crescent buttplate. Custom sling mounts have been added in the belly and the bottom of the forend at the front. The stocks have scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches with a few more notable dings. There is finish wear in the belly toward the toe. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 12 3/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly gone to a patina with scattered wear and some surface erosion. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is scattered light erosion and some minor pitting in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 65% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. Strongest finish is in the magazine tube. There is good finish on the barrel with some scattered wear and areas going to a light patina. The receiver has less finish with more areas going to patina. There is some light surface oxidation. There are some light nicks and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 1892 is a classic Winchester lever gun, making appearances in a wild array of Western movies and television shows as well as seeing extensive use all across America as a hunting and utility rifle. More than a million were made in the original production run and the rifle has since been copied by companies like Rossi and Browning.

This example was made in 1909 and is chambered for .25-20 WCF. Based on the .32-20 cartridge, the .25-20 is suitable for small game and this rifle has likely put a lot of pests in the ground and food on the table. The rifle has honest wear for its age, retaining original finish and strong mechanics. It will make a neat addition to a Winchester collection as-is and could likely be restored and taken back out in the field for another century. Please see our photos and good luck!
