Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884.” and “25-20 W.C.F.”. The top tang is marked “MODEL 1892 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK REG.IN U.S.PAT.OFF.”. The bottom of the receiver is marked “609985”. The top of the barrel and receiver are each marked with a Winchester WP proof.

Barrel Length: 24” Nominal, 24 1/4″ Measured, Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a patented blade dovetailed and screw set to the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch elevator sight with fine elevation adjustment, dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight has been replaced.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece smooth wood with straight grip, straight comb, crescent buttplate, and capped forend. The stocks have mild handling wear with a few more notable scrapes that have darkened on the buttstock. he LOP measures 12 7/8" from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttplate. Overall the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with defined rifling. There is light to mild erosion throughout the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 20% of its metal finish. Most of the finish on the receiver has worn to white with extensive thinning along the length of the barrel. The action shows operational wear. There is intermittent oxidation and mottled patina. Most of the blue on the magtube remains. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The hammer still fires at half cock with enough pressure on the trigger. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

A replacement rear sight has been installed, and while the bore shows erosion, it still retains visible rifling and may perform well with lead cast loads.

The stocks, with their crescent buttplate and capped forend, retain a pleasing appearance with no structural issues—just the kind of honest wear expected from a rifle that saw use, not abuse.
