Sights / Optics: Standard open sights. AN M84 Telescope sight is mounted to the barrel. The sight picture is clear and the light transmission is good. The turrets adjust with a positive click. The turret caps lock in place, the sunshade still works, and the rubber eyepiece is pliable. The body and lenses show light scratches and the eye piece shows some degradation from age.

 

 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking loop and a metal butt plate with a hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13". The wood has been sanded and refinished. The butt plate has been refinished and shows light wear. The door spring functions correctly. The wood shows scattered compressions and lines with a notable scratch on the left side of the toe. The forward handguard was split in half and repaired. Overall the wood is in Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is very bright, the rifling is sharp, with minor erosion on the lands in the bore. Our gauges read 1 at muzzle and 1 at throat. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.75/10.

 

 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. Most of the balance is edge-thinning. The action shows light operational wear. There are some scattered light marks. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good+ condition.

 

 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

 

 

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the M2 flash hider, scope and mount, MRT 62 cheek pad, BMC 1944 Web sling, Certificate of authenticity from CMP.

 

 

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1D is one of the rarest M1 Garands ever produced. The WIN-13 receiver was produced by Winchester arguably by mistake in 1943 and then hidden away due to an overlap in serial number ranges with Springfield. In January 1945, Winchester decided to use these receivers in the 1.6 million serial number block. Approximately 40,000 of these receivers were made. This required a new drawing number, "D28291WIN-13", now known as Dash 13s or Win-13 receivers. This example, retrofitted as an M1D sniper rifle, makes this a very unique rifle. The total number of service grade rifles converted by the military to M1D configuration is unknown, but over 10,000 were converted. No fewer than 5,000 M1Ds were sold or given to foreign nations. In 1993 and 1994 over 6,000 M1D rifles were deemed obsolete and destroyed under orders from the Secretary of the Army. Beginning in 1995, M1D rifles were sold by DCM/CMP. This rifle was sold by the CMP in 2014 as a WRA M1D Garand.
