Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade that is dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U notch that is dovetailed to the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The one piece smooth wood stock has a pistol grip, straight comb, and hard rubber buttplate. The stock shows light wear from handling and storage. The wood shows a few minor compressions, scrapes, and scuff marks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows light wear. The wood to metal fit is tight. This stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original 

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some light freckling. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates a 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear from handling and storage. There is scattered finish loss from wear and erosion, showing light brown patina in a few spots. The metal shows minor nicks, scratches, and scuffs. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 59 is rare, with only around 9,200 having been made in a short manufacturing run from 1930-31. Production was most likely halted due to the Great Depression. This gun, like many other single shot bolt action rifles at the time, were specifically made and marketed for the youth (“boys rifle”). It followed the Model 58, having a longer barrel and different stock. This is a well preserved example of a seldom seen .22 rifle that is a must have for any Winchester collection.
