Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a rifle ladder sight which presents a fixed u-notch when down and a sliding u-notch leaf when up, dovetailed to the barrel. The tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth wood with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, saddle ring and steel carbine-style buttplate. There is minor scattered finish loss and a few handling marks. There are no cracks. There is loss on the left side of the wrist in the upper corner of the receiver and tang. The LOP measures 12 7/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has turned a mottled patina. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition. The bottom of the wrist is marked "SMOOTH" on the wood.

Bore Condition: The smooth bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows mild handling wear along with thinning on the leading edges. There is intermittent oxidation, more concentrated at the receiver. There is saddle ring wear on the receiver. There are a few minor dings and nicks. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine represents one of John M. Browning’s most enduring lever-action designs, and this 1929 example occupies an exceptionally narrow and intriguing niche within late production. Often grouped under the collector nickname “Movie Guns,” current research suggests these carbines were more likely assembled as parts clean-up guns during the late 1920s, rather than being purpose-built for film studios. Their visual profile, however, aligns closely with period expectations of the Old West, helping to cement their enduring mystique. The octagon-barrel saddle ring configuration remains one of the most visually striking variants of the Model 1892 and stands apart sharply from standard round-barrel carbines of the era.

What elevates this example further is its documented smoothbore barrel. According to current Winchester Collectors Association research, only four factory smoothbore examples of the 20 inch octagon saddle ring configuration are presently documented, compared to just thirteen known rifled counterparts. This places the smoothbore variant among the rarest known configurations of the Model 1892, with production figures that remain undocumented in surviving factory records. Examination of these carbines indicates they were assembled using 20 inch short-rifle barrels, evidenced by the location of the forend cap tenon dovetail matching short-rifle architecture rather than standard carbine construction, reinforcing the parts-utilization theory surrounding their manufacture.

Chambered in .44 W.C.F., one of Winchester’s most historically significant cartridges, this carbine reflects a chambering long associated with frontier use, exhibition shooting, and period spectacle.
