Samuel Colt built a state of the art factory in Hartford, Connecticut in the 1850s, which still stands today as a testament to Colt's gunmaking genius. In the late 1960s, Colt offered well made backlit hanging clocks to its dealers for the princely sum of $15, suggesting to its dealers that the sign would provide “around-the-clock” in-store advertising that would generate more sales and more profit. We have no doubt the Colt Single Action Army on one side and the “Rampant Colt” centering the clock on the other got the heart fluttering on most potential buyers, and spurred many purchases of Colt firearms. This Vintage 1960s Colt “Registered Colt’s Dealer” Advertising Sign Fully Functional Backlit Hanging Clock is in Good condition, with heavy cracking in the plastic at the top right corner, a vertical hairline crack in the plastic along the middle top edge, the plastic having begun to pull away from the frame along the entire top edge, heavy tape repairing along that top edge to preserve the clock in the interim, though it would likely benefit from a more professional restoration if the next owner so desires, and with some overall age wear evident. Otherwise, the clock is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough yellowish beige molded plastic face, gold colored metal frame construction. Most interestingly, it bears an elegant front design of red and black with “REGISTERED / Colt’s / DEALER” at the upper right front and “Colt Industries / Colt’s Firearms Division” at the lower right front, centered by a depiction of the iconic Colt Single Action Army, carries a classic late 1960s “dotted” clock at the left front, with the equally iconic “Rampant Colt” logo in the middle of the design, and remains fully functional (the clock still moves and the backlight still glows) when the power cord is plugged into the wall. It measures 24 ?” x 12 ?” x 4 ½”,features the original riveted brass hanging chain still attached at top, and is ready to mount in a gun room tomorrow, and reminisce about the good old days when Colts were still sold in “mom and pop” hardware and surplus stores.
