Very Good Condition. Wonderful grouping from USMC Major Burt B. Sorensen, who enlisted in the US Marine Corps on March 18, 1940, was promoted to Platoon Sergeant on October 1, 1942, and was then honorably discharged as an EM on February 21, 1943 to accept an officer’s commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 24, 1943. Based on his honorable discharge certificates, several of which are included in the grouping, he served in the 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. That regiment fought on Bougainville in late 1943 and early 1944, Guam in mid-1944, and Iwo Jima in early 1945. This grouping includes a beautiful original US Navy/USMC Type I Purple Heart in the scarce, early “purple box” and with a sterling silver 1” wide ribbon bar, a rare USMC WW2 campaign hat with an M-37 EM EGA at front, and with the name “SORENSEN, B.” stenciled several times inside, a USMC post-WW2 Officer visor cap with an M-37 EM EGA at front and the calling card of “BURT B. SORENSEN / MAJOR U.S.M.C.R.” inside, two “piss cutters” with EGAs, a fantastic WW2 scrapbook with all kinds of Marine related newspaper clippings inside, including a copy of the Shanghai Marine newspaper “Walla Walla” from 1941, another book with a vast assortment of his wartime and postwar records, including a 1947 dated, hand signed Vandegrift letter congratulating him on his service, and much more.
