The US Army saw the success of German mountain troops in Norway, and quickly created its own elite mountain unit, the 10th Mountain Division. Elements of the 10th were among the only US units deployed to both the Pacific and the ETO in WW2. After landing on Kiska only to find the Japanese gone, they shipped out for Italy, and drove the Germans from their vaunted "Gothic" line in early 1945. Special uniforms and equipment were worn by the "Mountain Men" of the 10th, as well as the combined US/Canadian special mountain infantry known as the First Special Service Force. This pair of US Army WW2 10th Mountain FSSF Full Size 10x58" Snowshoes are in Very Good Condition, with some scattered tearing to the rawhide latticework at each middle, a modern replacement black cotton cord repair to the latticework at each middle, some scattered darkening to the latticework throughout, some light cracking to the back base of one wooden frame, some fragility to the latticework throughout, and with some overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, they are the scarce full size snowshoes, boast the classic rawhide latticework throughout, with black leather boot bindings at each middle, and are “U.S.” stamped at each middle wooden frame, along with their maker, “C.A. LUND / HASTINGS, MINN.”. They are marked at each back base with the size, “10x58”, matching serial numbers “17708”, and the date, “1943”, and are a fine example of rare, original US Army WW2 10th Mountain FSSF Full Size 10x58" Snowshoes. A great relic of the “Mountain Men”, and the “Forcemen” of the “Devil’s Brigade”.
