Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry was the one-man knife making operation of Dale Sandberg, whose distinctive fighting knives have become highly sought after and collectible today. Taking its name from nearby Eight Dollar Mountain in Southern Oregon, Dale Sandberg began crafting knives in the mid to late 1980s, and his creations truly gained popularity during the Global War on Terror. By then, most EDMF knives were knuckle dusters, and these intimidating custom fighters were carried by US Army troops and US Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dale Sandberg estimated that he made some 2,000 in his knife making career, and he sadly passed away earlier this year in 2025. This US Army USMC Marine GWOT Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry EDMF Bowie Fighting Knuckle Knife is in Near Mint Condition, with only some light scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, it features a hefty 9 3/4” clip point bowie blade that retains approximately 99% of the original dark parkerized finish, sports the classic 6 point knuckle bowed steel “D” guard, and is stamped at the top right side of that guard with its maker, “EDMF” (the famous Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry), and the serial number, “1397”, along with the date of manufacture, “10/01” (October 2001), marked at the top left side of the guard. It boasts a crisp OD paracord wrapped steel handle with a wrist lanyard extending from the bottom of the wrap, and is complete with the original US GWOT EDMF Hard Black Plastic Scabbard in Excellent Condition, with some light dusting at the front body, some light scratching to the back body, and with some light scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, it bears the classic brass riveted black hard plastic body, carries a fully functional brass “glove” snap closure leather handle retention strap on the upper front black leather belt hanger, and is stamped at the upper back of that hanger with the matching maker, serial number, and date, “EDMF / #1397 / 10/01”. The fact that this knife and scabbard were made in October 2001 reflects the large increase in volunteers for US military service immediately following the September 11th terrorist attacks, and imbues the set with a real sense of patriotism.
