Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade with red insert, integral to a solid rib. The rear sight is a square notch adjustable for windage and elevation, screwed to the top-strap. Under the rear sight, the topstrap is factory drilled and tapped for mounting an optic.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a Hogue Monogrip pebble-textured black rubber with finger grooves. The grip has light handling wear with some scattered scuffing. There are no rips or tears. Overall, the grip is in Very Good condition as not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its finish. There are some scattered minor scuffs and tiny marks. There is some stubborn fouling from firing. The action shows operational wear including a turn-line on the cylinder. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with a strong slot. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The 686 is a well-balanced, double-action revolver from Smith & Wesson that has gained notoriety as one of the most effective home defense and duty pistols ever made. This example has a shorter 2 1/2" barrel which makes it nice for a carry revolver. With its excellent trigger and comfortable grip, this revolver would make a fine home defense handgun, hunting sidearm, or addition to a collection lacking a revolver. This revolver is in Very Good condition with signs of responsible use since its production in the early '90s, perfect for adding to your carry rotation or hitting the range.
