This item is a regulation U.S. military carbine boot manufactured at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois between approximately 1887 and 1895 for use with the U.S. Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor carbine chambered in .45-70 Government. The boot is constructed of heavy black leather and features the distinctive flared throat reinforced with a triangular brass plate designed to guide the carbine muzzle into the scabbard while protecting the leather opening from wear. A long leather suspension strap with adjustment holes is riveted near the leading edge of the boot, allowing the piece to hang vertically from a saddle or rigging.

As specified in Ordnance Memoranda No. 29 of 1891, this second variation of the regulation carbine boot was lengthened to approximately 13 5/8 inches in order to better accommodate the Springfield carbine equipped with the Buffington rear sight. The leading edge of the body incorporates a lower sight swell to provide clearance for the rear sight assembly, while the rigging straps are spaced further apart for improved stability when mounted on cavalry equipment.

These carbine boots were issued for cavalry use and served to securely carry the Springfield trapdoor carbine on horseback while protecting the weapon from dust, weather, and impact.
