Sights / Optics: The front of the barrel has a brass bead. There is a placard in the side of the stock that is marked with what appears to be, “C.W.M.Connell To H.H. Hoinsey”

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece walnut set with a straight wrist, fluted straight comb, and a steel buttplate. There are moderate handling marks throughout. There are cracks forming at the wrist. The LOP measures 13.9” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fair overall condition as a refinished antique.

Bore Condition: The smooth bore is gray. There is moderate pitting throughout. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10 as an Antique.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about none of its metal finish. The case color frame has faded and gone to patina. There are some light pitting marks throughout. The remaining finish on the barrel has turned to patina. The screw heads show moderate use. The markings are mostly clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition for an Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington Rolling Block shotgun was a continuation of one of the most successful and rugged single-shot designs of the 19th century. Originally conceived for military rifles, the rolling block action quickly gained popularity among civilian shooters and hunters due to its simplicity, strength, and adaptability. Between 1874 and 1879, Remington produced the Type 2 New Model Rolling Block shotguns in various gauges for commercial sale, capitalizing on the growing American market for inexpensive and reliable single-shot smoothbores. Offered here in scarce 20 gauge, this example would have served as a versatile utility gun for small game and farm use during the late 19th century. This shotgun retains its original 32” barrel with a fixed full choke, and it wears the honest patina of a well-used black powder-era firearm. The bore exhibits moderate pitting consistent with age and black powder fouling but remains intact, rating a 6/10 by antique standards. The walnut stock shows wear and minor damage, including wrist cracks, but retains character and structural integrity. A particularly intriguing feature is the small metal placard inset into the stock, inscribed “C.W. M. Connell To H.H. Hoinsey,” suggesting this firearm may have been gifted or commemorated—offering a tangible connection to the personal history of its former owners.
