Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a half moon blade slotted to the solid fluted barrel rib. The rear sight is a shallow v-notch in the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The grip panels are two-piece smooth mother-of-pearl. The grips have shrunken slightly with some natural discoloration from age. There are faint handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Very Good condition as Antique.

Type of Finish: Nickel, Case Color Hammer, Fire Blue Trigger and pins.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is very faint erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: The revolver retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish is strong and complete throughout with only a few minor scattered scratches. There is minor oxidation on the hammer. The screw heads are lightly tooled with strong serviceable slots. The pins are unmarred. The bottom grip screw is disfigured. The markings are clear. Overall this revolver is in Fine condition as an Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions mostly as intended. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington Smoot New Model No. 2 represents an important chapter in late nineteenth century American pocket revolver design, produced during the transitional period when metallic cartridge arms were rapidly replacing percussion handguns. Manufactured between 1877 and 1885, this compact five shot revolver chambered in .30 rimfire reflects Remington’s effort to compete in the growing market for small, easily carried personal defense arms. Its solid frame, side loaded cylinder, and distinctive spur trigger configuration are hallmarks of the Smoot design, offering a blend of simplicity, durability, and practical concealability for civilian use.

This example presents in Fine condition as an antique, retaining approximately 90 percent of its original nickel finish with strong, even coverage and only minor scattered scratches from light handling. The case colored hammer and fire blued trigger and pins remain visually appealing, while the bore is bright with sharp rifling and only very faint erosion, rating 7 out of 10. The mother of pearl grips show natural age related shrinkage and discoloration but remain free of cracks or chips, contributing to the revolver’s period character. With clear markings, largely intact finish, and honest mechanical presentation, this Smoot No. 2 stands as a well preserved example of Remington’s small frame cartridge revolvers from the post Civil War era.
