Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass bead fixed to the barrel.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is a two piece wood set. It has a semi-pistol grip, hard rubber buttplate, smooth forend, and a straight comb. There is moderate wear with pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. There is a repair to the bottom of the stock where it meets the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the furniture is in Very Good condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished barrel

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright showing faint surface oxidation. There is very infrequent light pitting in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This firearm retains about 40% of its current metal finish. The receiver finish is mostly gone, though much of the barrel refinish remains. The metal surfaces show scattered scuffs and scratches, with some scattered pitting on the receiver. The screw heads show moderate marring and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a scarce and well preserved example of Remington's small bore single shot shotgun from the turn of the twentieth century. Approximately 40% of the original finish remains, consistent with age and honest use. The shotgun retains matching numbered parts, an important point of originality. The 28" barrel provides a classic field profile and smooth sighting plane, and the uncommon 24 gauge chambering reflects a period preference for small bore sporting arms.

Mechanically, the shotgun is very strong. The bore rates 9 out of 10, showing bright interior condition and light wear, which is especially notable for a black powder era shotgun. The action functions correctly with positive lockup and smooth operation, consistent with Remington's reputation for durable single shot designs of this period.

Historically, the Model 1893 / No. 3 series were produced during a time when Remington offered a wide range of affordable yet well made single shot shotguns for farm, field, and small game use. The 24 gauge chambering is far less common than 12 or 16 gauge examples and adds meaningful collector interest. With strong mechanical condition, a high quality bore, and honest remaining finish, this shotgun stands as a desirable and increasingly scarce representative of Remington's early sporting shotgun production.
