Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base forged to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding "U"-notch sight with white diamond aiming reference dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation and can be reversed to present a "V"-notch. The rear sight is missing its detent spring, it folds up and down loosely. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Redfield bases and rings holding a Weaver K3 60-B 3x scope with crosshair reticle. The scope has some light wear in the body, the glass is fairly clear but could use a good cleaning. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none present).

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb, ventilated orange rubber White Line recoil pad and sling swivels front and rear. The stocks have fairly evenly scattered finish wear. There are some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad, 13 1/8" to the back of the wood. The pad has moderate-heavy wear and cracking, hardened with age. Overall, the stock rates in Good-Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original. The bolt's serial marking is worn, but appears to match.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion, but there is scattered stubborn fouling. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 87% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches, most notable on the barrel forward of the forend and on the trigger guard. The action shows operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt knob. There is infrequent very minor surface oxidation. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .270 Winchester and made in 1952. The is the “Standard Rifle” version with monte-carlo stock and is one of the most popular styles in one of the most popular chamberings. With its high velocity and excellent ballistic coefficient, the .270 Winchester makes for a great hunting rifle where longer shots may need to be taken, it makes a fine long-range target rifle as well. This is a classic rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game. That said, the Pre-64 Winchesters have high collector interest, and this would be a good addition to a Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
