Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Redfield brass-beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a "U"-notch elevator sight dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel. The notch is fine-adjustable for elevation. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for mounting an optic, none present. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight, none present.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a capped pistol grip, black nosecap, straight comb with European-style cheekpiece, steel checkered buttplate, and Super-Grade sling plates inlaid front and rear, each with a Super Grade QD sling swivel. There is a little minor scuffing on the right of the nosecap. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate also has no notable wear or damage with well defined checkering. The stock rates in Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching, the barrel is Super marked and 52 dated.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is very faint operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This rifle comes in a two-piece cardboard Winchester box with serial and model matching label, manual, hang-tag, Olin bolt-tag and wax paper. The cardboard spacer is missing, but the bolt compartment is present.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade rifle chambered in .270 Winchester and made in 1952. The Super Grade has nicer-grain wood with a nosecap, grip cap, cheekpiece and nicer checkering than would be found on the Standard Rifles. This example is a wonderful find for collectors, not only a desirable variant, but just about the finest specimen in terms of condition you can find. The wood finish has a deep color, indicative of a rifle that spent most of its life inside the box, little sign of the bolt having been installed, much less operated. It's just an outstanding rifle. It would still make a nice hunting rifle, but with its box, manual, hang-tag, and superior condition, it will have high collector interest, even for a Super Grade, and this would be a gorgeous addition to even an advanced Winchester collection.
