This lot features a pair of bronze cowboy spurs manufactured by North & Judd Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut. The spurs are marked "Hercules Bronze" and display the small star marking associated with the company's "Star Brand" line. The shanks are smooth and are fitted with steel rowels, while the heel bands display distinctive silver Indian Head conchos mounted to each side.

North & Judd was established in 1878 and quickly became one of the largest American manufacturers of equestrian hardware including spurs, bits, and saddle equipment. Their Anchor Brand trademark was registered in 1879. In 1926 the firm acquired the August Buermann Manufacturing Company of Newark, New Jersey and continued producing many of Buermann's spur styles and marks. Buermann's company, which operated from 1868 to 1926, was among the most influential spur manufacturers in the United States and produced a wide variety of English, military, Mexican, and cowboy patterns.

These spurs follow the Buermann-style Western pattern and incorporate decorative engraving and silver Indian Head conchos. The bronze surfaces display an attractive aged patina consistent with use. This pair represents a classic example of early to mid twentieth century Western riding equipment produced during the period when North & Judd continued Buermann-influenced designs under their Star Brand line.
