Sights / Optics: There is a brass bead at the muzzle. The rear sight is a shallow groove on the top-front of the receiver.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth walnut with two-piece forend panels, semi-pistol grip, straight comb and checkered steel buttplate. The finish shows scattered crazing. There is a tiny loss at the toe. There are scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches with a few more notable dings, mostly finished-over. The LOP measures 12 1/2" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly gone to a moderate patina with scattered surface oxidation and well defined checkering. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition as refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There is some minor erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 8+/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 80% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is some finish wear along each side of the barrel forward of the forend and the top of the barrel over the forend has areas going to a light patina. The bottom of the magazine tube shows similar patina to the barrel. The receiver retains generally strong finish. There are a few light nicks and scratches. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions properly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1901 is a desirable 10 gauge lever-action shotgun manufactured ca. 1917, right at the end of the model's production. As the later, strengthened successor to the Winchester Model 1887, the Model 1901 has strong collector interest due to its unusual lever-action design and large 10 gauge chambering. This example is a "Brush Gun", with a 26" cylinder bore barrel, a good configuration where closer, quick shots are expected, such as in heavy brush.

Condition is notably better than many surviving Model 1901 shotguns. The shotgun retains about 80% of its original blue finish with refinished stocks. It retains a good bore and strong mechanics. Overall, this is a strong Winchester Model 1901 example with good remaining original finish, clear markings, proper function, and in a fairly scarce configuration.
