Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is checkered walnut with a semi pistol grip, straight comb, and a serrated synthetic buttplate. The furniture only shows some minor pressure dings and drag lines. The checkering on the grip is worn smooth from being refinished. The semi pistol grip cap is chipped in the front. The wood has no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14.125" and 13.125" from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the buttpad. The drop at comb is about 1.625" and the drop at the heel is about 2.75". The buttpad has light wear and some debris stuck in the serrations. Overall, the furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright with light streaking. There is no erosion in the bores. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 9.5 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The barrel set shows a few minor scratches and several spots of faint surface oxidation. The receiver has very slight fading of the case color, along with some small freckles of surface oxidation and edge wear. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are faintly tooled and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock to the receiver with no play. The safety does not engage automatically when the barrel set is opened. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This L.C. Smith Field Grade Featherweight was manufactured in 1948 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic firearm. The L.C. Smith is one of America's finest classic sidelock double-barrel shotguns. The Field Grade was the company's most popular configuration, offering outstanding craftsmanship and dependable field performance without unnecessary embellishment. Built on the lightweight Featherweight frame, this shotgun provides excellent balance and handling, making it especially appealing to upland hunters and collectors of classic American doubles.

Chambered for 16 Gauge with 28 inch barrels, this side-by-side features a fixed Improved Modified choke in both the right and left barrels. The Featherweight action and 16 Gauge chambering create a combination long regarded as one of the most graceful and practical upland hunting configurations produced. In this writer's opinion, the bores rate 9.5 out of 10, indicating excellent internal condition. The action functions correctly.

The refinished furniture rates in Very Good condition with honest handling wear. This shotgun retains approximately 95% of its original metal finish, exhibiting only light signs of use while maintaining an attractive overall appearance. Overall, this shotgun rates in Very Good Plus to Fine condition and represents an excellent example of the L.C.
