Finish Originality: Original, numbers match.

Bore Condition: The chambers have scattered erosion and pitting. In this writer's opinion, the bores rate 5/10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 30% of its metal finish. The frame has some scattered finish, strongest on the right flat. The cylinder has mostly worn or been cleaned to white with a little finish on the rear face. There are some little nicks, scratches and some scattered casting flaws on the frame. There are tool marks on the cylinder pin. The screw heads are tooled with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Very Good condition

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Developed by James of Catskill, NY, Reid worked mostly on compact revolvers. During the Civil War, he worked with Marston and Irving in New York City before starting his own firm. He was granted a patent on a pepperbox-style revolver which incorporated a knuckle for use as a melee weapon which he named 'My Friend'. Indeed, this would be a friendly carry for concealment and devastating effect. The frame doubles as a ring in which you could have knocked out a fellow poker player if insults were exchanged, it has a lot of character, with a decent amount of silver plating left. This particular revolver is a first model with ‘My Friend’ stamped below the cylinder. Around 10,000 of the No. 1 Model were made, chambered for .22 rimfire like this one, and they are a wonderful collector piece with different models, chamberings, and variations.
