Imperial German Army Artillery officers of WW1 carried finely made swords as a mark of rank, and as a last line of personal defense. This Imperial German Army WW1 Artillery Officer's "Lion Head" Pommel Dress Sword is in Very Good Condition, with some scratching at each side of the blade, some light loosening between the blade and hilt, some patina to the wire handle wrapping, some light nicking, scratching, and spot soiling to the handle covering, some scattered patina to the guard, ferrule, and backstrap/pommel, missing the leather bumper pad from the blade/guard join, and with some scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, it features a gleaming 29 1/2” bright finished slightly upswept fullered blade, sports the classic gilt brass “P” guard with langets, the right of which is embellished with Artillery “crossed cannons”, gilt brass oak leaves embellished brass ferrule, and gilt brass beautifully embellished backstrap and “lion’s head” pommel, the latter of which carries piercing red rhinestone eyes. The sword is unmarked as to its maker, boasts the traditional black celluloid covered wood grip with triple brass wire wrapping, and is complete with the original Imperial German Army WW1 Officer Metal Scabbard in Very Good Condition, with only some scattered scratching, finish abrading, spot patina, and age wear evident. Most interestingly, it retains approximately 75% of the original glossy black painted finish, exhibits the original metal hanging ring at the upper left side, and bears a matching glossy black painted “D.R.G.M.” marked belt clip mounted to the hanging post at the upper back. The set is a fine example of a rare, original Imperial German Army WW1 Artillery Officer's "Lion Head" Pommel Dress Sword.
