Very Good Condition. In regards to Reichsmarschall Goering's Luftwaffe sword: Some chipping to the left side of the blade tip. Some light scratching to the gleaming 28" straight bright blade. Some spot scuffing to the blue leather covered wood grip. Classic elongated feather guard and oversized circular pommel. Moderate denting, scuffing, and surface tearing to the original leather covered sheath. Etched at the reverse ricasso with the logo of its maker, the famous "PAUL WEYERSBERG & CO / SOLINGEN". In regards to General Vandenburg's M-1902 sword: There's a small chip to the blade tip, some light scratching to the blade, and some light spot patina to the blade and guard. There's moderate finish abrading and patina to the body of the scabbard. It features a 29 3/4" slightly upswept bright fullered blade that exhibits elegant "U.S." martial themed etching at each side, and is etched at the reverse ricasso with its maker, "GEMSCO / NEW YORK / MADE IN / ENGLAND". It sports the classic nickel plated three branch guard, and black finished wood "finger groove" handle. These two swords are made invaluable by their engraving. The Luftwaffe sword bears the family coat of arms of Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering exquisitely engraved on the back throat. The M-1902 sword carries the inscription "ONE SWORD KEEPS ANOTHER IN ITS SHEATH / GENERAL HOYT S. VANDENBURG / UNITED STATES AIR FORCE" engraved at the upper back throat. Though the Vandenburg inscription is heavily faded and difficult to read, the letters remain just legible enough to decipher. After his capture at the end of the war in May 1945, Goering was flown to Augsburg, Germany where he was interrogated by General Carl F. Spaatz and Lieutenant General Hoyt S. Vandenburg. We have shown a photo of that meeting between Vandenburg and Goering, and we have also shown a photo of Goering standing next to Hitler and wearing his Luftwaffe officer sword. Various additional photocopies of period pictures and paperwork from the consignor are included in this lot. These swords came from the same consignor, but it cannot be confirmed that they were acquired as a set. Either way, this is an incredibly historic pair of swords.
