The world had never seen an army like the German army of WW2; as Winston Churchill once said, "If it is to live in peace, it must never see another". At its apogee, Germany's conquests extended from the French channel ports in the West to Stalingrad in the East. The German national war flag, known as the “Reichskriegflagge”, was a medium sized flag of about 67” x 39”. Hoisted daily by members of the German Wehrmacht, the flag had to be flown from a pole positioned near the barracks entrance, or near the guard room or staff building. Captured German war flags were highly prized war souvenirs among US Army troops in the ETO, for not only could they be sent home to loved ones, but could also be traded to rear echelon troops for cigarettes or alcohol. This German WW2 Wool Reichskriegflagge 100x170cm National War Flag is in Good Condition, with a sizable 3” x 2” moth tear in the middle field, another sizable 3” x 2” moth tear in the lower fly end, heavy scattered moth tearing throughout, some “browning” to the hoist, and with some overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, it’s constructed of wool, and is double sided with a bright red background, a large white central circle displaying a large swastika in black, and with a beam cross design also in black extending to the edges. It bears an Iron Cross in black on white in the canton, sports a white cotton hoist with a halyard inside that terminates in cotton loops on both ends, and is stamped along the back of that hoist with “Reichskriegsflg.”, the number 5”, the dimensions in centimeters, “100x170”, and its maker, “Plutzar & Brüll KG., Bielitz O/S.”.
