Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a smooth ramped base, fixed to the barrel and slotted for a hood, none present. The rear sight is a u-notch semi-buckhorn elevator sight, dovetailed to the barrel. The tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight, none present.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with capped forend, pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered steel shotgun-style buttplate. There are scattered scratches, dings, and handling marks throughout. There are light spots of finish loss, mostly on the left side of the buttstock. There are no cracks or chips. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is minor fouling in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 5% of its original finish. Most of the rifle has been cleaned and has taken to a light mottled patina. There is some finish remaining on the lower tang. There is intermittent oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions smoothly and correctly, and the trigger is crisp. This rifle has lever and half-cock hammer safeties. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 64 was introduced in January 1933 as the successor to the Model 55 and represented a refined sporting-rifle treatment of John M. Browning's proven Model 1894 action. Initially chambered in .25-35 W.C.F., .30 W.C.F., and .32 Winchester Special, the Model 64 combined a 24-inch barrel with a pistol-grip stock, shotgun-style buttplate, and shortened magazine for improved balance and handling. This first-year .25-35 example is especially attractive as an early expression of one of Winchester's classic prewar sporting rifles.

This rifle retains about 5% of its original blue finish, with most of the metal cleaned to a light mottled patina and showing light intermittent oxidation and normal operational wear. Its walnut stocks remain in Very Good condition with scattered handling marks, light finish loss, and no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9/10, while the action operates smoothly and correctly with a crisp trigger. With its very early serial number, desirable .25-35 chambering, sound mechanics, and honest period character, this is a worthy first-year Model 64 for the Winchester collector.
