An incredibly rare, highly significant example of early American custom cutlery hand-forged by the undisputed grandfather of modern knifemaking, William "Bill" Scagel (1873–1963). This imposing, forward-heavy frontier-style chopper or heavy camp splitter is built around a massive carbon-steel blade, modified down from a historical industrial splitter tool. It features a sweeping, deep clip point tip that gracefully tapers forward from the upper edge while retaining its original functional lanyard or hanging hole near the spine apex.
The obverse blade ricasso features a deep, well-struck, and highly vivid example of the collector-coveted "W. SCAGEL / HANDMADE" name stamp. Directly beneath the text sits Scagel's legendary "Kris" dagger cartouche, deeply struck into the steel.
The spine of the heavy carbon blade exhibits extensive, uniform peening—a testament to a lifetime of rugged, honest field work. This texturing along the spine transitions seamlessly down the blade flats into a gorgeous, highly developed spotted grey and charcoal patina, presenting rich mottled contrast with areas of light, stabilized pitting that emphasizes its undeniable antiquity.
The custom handle is constructed in Scagel's quintessential "mountain man" styling, showcasing a robust, beautifully aged deer crown stag pommel. The horn is anchored to the through-tang with dual black resin-coated leather spacer wraps and pinned brass accents, which remain completely tight and structurally sound.

Blade: Solid and uncleaned. Deeply struck hallmarks. Heavy peening along the upper spine. Sweeping, concave clip point profile is crisp. Shows a rich, authentic spotted patina throughout, interspersed with minor surface scale and scattered pitting consistent with late 19th or early 20th-century carbon steel. Edge remains stable.
Handle: Tight to the tang with zero play. The crown stag displays a magnificent amber-honey coloration. Leather spacers are completely stable.
