Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade slotted into the barrel rib. The rear sight is a “V”-notch in the barrel latch.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth mother-of-pearl birdshead panels. There is natural age toning, but no cracks. There is a minor loss in the top front corner of the right grip at the frame. The grips rate in about Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Silver-Plated Frame, Hammer & Cylinder. Blued Trigger.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is dull with defined rifling where not interrupted by erosion. There is erosion In this writer's opinion the bore rates 5/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 90% of its silver-plated finish. The engraving is sharp and consistent throughout. The screw heads are tool marked with serviceable slots. There is finish loss in the cylinder flutes where some of the plating has chipped away. The markings and serial numbers are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrel locks securely and tips up properly. The hammer holds full cock and the cylinder indexes and times well. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Smith and Wesson Model 1½ Second Issue revolver, produced circa 1868 to 1875, represents a refined pocket revolver from the post Civil War era when compact rimfire handguns were widely carried for personal protection. Chambered in .32 rimfire short and built on the familiar tip up frame, the Model 1½ offered a slightly larger and more authoritative alternative to the smaller Model 1 while retaining discreet proportions. The engraved surfaces and silver plated finish elevate this example beyond a standard production revolver, reflecting the Victorian era preference for decorative yet functional personal arms.

Condition remains visually striking, with strong silver plating retained and crisp, well executed engraving throughout. The bore shows age consistent wear with visible rifling, and the revolver maintains correct mechanical function with secure barrel lockup and proper timing. The mother of pearl birdshead grips display attractive natural toning with only a minor loss noted, adding to the period character without detracting from presentation. Accompanied by a fitted wooden case with accessories, this engraved Model 1½ offers an appealing combination of 19th century craftsmanship, ornamental detail, and surviving mechanical integrity.
