Sights / Optics: The front sight is a mortised post fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a "V" notch integral to the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth wood panels. The left panel has a "BH" Hannis cartouche, the bottom of the right panel has "L" inspectors mark. The grips have even handling wear with some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are small losses at the bottom corners. There are no cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition as Antique.

Type of Finish: Blue with Brass Trigger Guard

Finish Originality: Original The barrel and frame are serial-matching. Correct "L", "A", "H" and "W" inspector/assembler marks.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark gray with well defined rifling. There is erosion and pitting scattered through the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates about 4/10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 5% of its metal finish, all in the brass trigger guard. The trigger guard has gone to a mustard patina with some discoloration. Steel surfaces have mostly worn to white or gone to a patina. There is scattered surface erosion and light pitting. There are some nicks, scuffs and scratches. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. Markings are clear. The action shows operational wear. Overall, this revolver is in Very Good condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with a presentation case, period holster, red neck band, ladder badge, and a series of documentation attributing it to Walter H. Winchester of the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry, Company G.

Our Assessment: The Remington 1858 Army revolver was a sidearm used by the Union during the Civil War. The New Model Army is commonly called the Model 1858 because of its patent date on the barrel, but it was not actually produced until 1863, the 1861 Old Model having preceded it. This Remington New Model Army revolver is distinguished foremost by its exceptionally strong provenance and accompanying documentation, attributing it to service with the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War. This revolver is documented to have been carried by Walter H. Winchester of the 8th Volunteer New York Cavalry Regiment. The regiment was attached to the Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Potomac. In June of 1963, following the death of their regimental commander, Captain George Armstrong Custer took command of the regiment along with two others and led them through the surrounding Confederates in a daring saber charge to safety.

After the war, The 8th NY Volunteer Cavalry went to Washington DC and participated in The Grand Review. For that review, all of Custer's men wore red neckties. This historical collection also includes the red necktie as well as the ladder badge worn by Walter H. Winchester during the Grand Review, documented in the accompanying handwritten note from his grandson. This collection stayed in the hands of Walter H. Winchester's ancestors until 2002 when it was dontated to the National Armed Services and Law Enforcement Memorial Museum in Dunedin, FL. Documents and photos are included from the NASLEMM as well as newspaper clippings related to its last family owner, Dr. Walter H. Winchester. The breadth and depth of the accompanying material, period artifacts, letters, research, and a named soldier attribution, elevate this revolver from a standard Civil War sidearm to a deeply personal and historically significant artifact.
