Sights / Optics: This rifle has no provisions for iron sights. The rifle is mounted with a large raised sight block with two Weaver mounting blocks for mounting a scope.

Stock Configuration & Condition: This rifle includes two stocks. The original stock is a Springfield factory Supermatch walnut stock. The stock has a larger and heavier profile than a normal M1a stock with a semi pistol grip, slightly raised comb and hinged metal butt plate with storage. The rifle was originally bedded to this stock. The wood shows nicks and lines, with some minor compressions. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Very Good condition.

The installed stock is an AWC G2 bullpup stock with an integrated pistol grip, raised cheekpiece, two QD sling cups and a Decelerator butt pad. The length of pull is 17". The composite handguard on the right side at its thinnest point is broken. The inside of the magazine well shows rust most likely from a magazine. The butt pad shows only minor rub wear. Overall this stock is in Very Good condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: Includes 4x 20 round magazines. The magazines show some surface rust and are in good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to conversion.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion. The muzzle device shows minor fouling. The feed ramps are smooth and shiny showing minor copper marks. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains 97% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear. In order to make this conversion the barrel had to be cut down and the op-rod had to be cut apart and re-welded to move the charging handle forward. The magazine well shows the same rust as the stock. The trigger on the trigger pack shows rust. The safety has also been extended and functions correctly. The op rod shows some surface rust as well. The visible markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A was manufactured in 1991, originally as a Supermatch, and is an exceptionally interesting example of the M1A platform, having been converted into a compact bullpup rifle using an AWC G2 stock. The AWC G2 concept was developed by Lynn McWilliams and Gale McMillan in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the goal of creating an exceptionally accurate, compact designated marksman rifle from the heavier, longer M1A platform. The conversion involved shortening the barrel, re-welding the operating rod to relocate the handle forward, and installing a substantial sight block as part of the bullpup configuration. Unlike other bullpups this rifle uses a cable not a transfer bar to operate the trigger. Although the concept ultimately proved too expensive, the resulting rifles were known for their accuracy and compact handling, and original factory-built examples are exceptionally scarce.

What makes this particular rifle even more interesting is its Supermatch foundation providing a particularly strong platform for the AWC conversion given the heavy barrel and upgraded trigger. This example is known to have originally been shipped as a complete rifle from Springfield rather than a stripped receiver, confirming the conversion of a factory-produced M1A rather than a rifle assembled by AWC. While not one of the exceedingly rare factory-produced AWC rifles, this conversion retains considerable historical and mechanical interest as an example of the effort to transform the M1A into a compact precision rifle. The combination of a 1991 Supermatch, the unusual AWC G2 bullpup configuration, and the extensive modifications required to create it makes this an exceptionally rare and genuinely fascinating chapter in the evolution of the M1A platform.
