The old adage goes, “To he who has more, more is given, to he who has less more is taken away.” By the late 19th century, Winchester Repeating Arms was a behemoth of a firearms company, and the sheer number of different cartridges available for their lever action repeaters and single shot rifles, from the powerful .50-110 Express, to the iconic .44-40 WCF, to the humble .22 rimfire, presented them with a tremendous marketing opportunity. Winchester “bullet boards” displayed the incredible breadth of Winchester’s cartridge lineup, and signaled to customers and competitors alike that whether for hunting, sporting, war, or target shooting, there was hardly a cartridge extant that was outside of Winchester’s realm. This Custom Reproduction Winchester Model 1884/1890 Single W Style Framed Cartridge Display Bullet Board is in Very Good Condition, with the lead bullet of the .38-44 S&W cartridge having recessed into the case, a wood replacement bullet on the .44 Evans Shot case, another wood replacement bullet on the .45-70 Sabot case, missing the bullet from the .45-70 Gatling case, missing another bullet from the .44 WCF case, some scattered patina to some of the cartridges, some scattered crazing to the painted designs at front, 4 very small surface holes in the upper left front, moderate scattered nicking, scraping, glue, tape, and other crafting marks around the back, and with some overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, the thick, heavy wooden frame measures 48 1/2” x 33” x 5”, the “hunter green" cartridge display board itself measures 43 3/4” x 27 1/2”, and this impressive custom reproduction combines elements of both the Winchester Model 1884 and Model 1890 “Single W” bullet boards. It boasts numerous original cartridges (cases with bullets and primers) glued at front, with the cartridges in a “single W” shape with shotgun shells in vertical rows at each side, and there is an oval cutout of a modern print of Charlie Russell’s 1909 “When Horse Flesh Comes High” pasted at middle. The upper front of the board reads “WINCHESTER / REPEATING ARMS CO.” in red and white lettering, the middle carries the traditional “H” for Henry headstamp in red and gold, the lower front reads “NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A.”, “NEW YORK”, and “SAN FRANCISCO” in white, along with “METALLIC AMMUNITION / PAPER AND BRASS SHELLS / FELT GUN WADS / PRIMERS & C.” in a gold rectangle at the lower left front corner, and “Winchester Repeating / Rifles AND SHOT GUNS / AND SINGLE SHOT RIFLES” in a gold rectangle at the lower right front corner, and all of the cartridges are identified in white. A great amount of time and effort was put into this piece, and it shows a high level of craftsmanship. It sports a white paracord hanging rope across the upper back, and is a fine example of a Custom Reproduction Winchester Model 1884/1890 Single W Style Framed Cartridge Display Bullet Board.
