Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set and pinned to a raised square block. The front sight block is dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a carbine ladder sight which presents a fixed v-notch when down and a sliding v-notch leaf when up marked 2-9, dovetailed and screw set to the barrel. The top tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight, none present.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece smooth walnut with straight grip, straight comb, steel carbine buttplate, and banded forend. There is a sling eyelet in the belly of the buttstock and another eyelet installed in the bottom of the band. The serial number on the buttstock in the tang recess does not match the receiver. The buttplate matches the buttstock. There are no chips or cracks. There are light handling marks. The stocks have been lightly sanded and refinished. The LOP measures 13 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has gone to a mottled patina. The stocks rate in Very Good overall condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is very light erosion. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 45% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. Strongest finish is in the barrel with good blue along the magazine tube. The receiver has some scattered color and figuring with most surfaces muted or gone to a mottled patina. There is strong case color in the protected areas. There is some scattered light surface oxidation. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are some tool marks on the barrel around the sides of the rear and front sight. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool-marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. The barrel and magtube have been cut down. The magazine cap is a bit loose. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as customized.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes an antique leather sling in Good condition. There is surface cracking and the leather is a bit stiff, but there are no significant rips or tears.
Our Assessment: This is the original Model 1895 that was in production from 1895 until 1915. The Model 1895 was the mechanical twin of the Model 1893 only made with larger dimensions to accommodate the larger rounds. This example has been modified to a 1895 carbine configuration with a 22” round barrel chambered for the powerful .40-60 cartridge. 5,304 guns were produced through 1906, of which only 205 were carbines, and 18,000 manufactured through 1915. Given the extreme scarcity of the 1895 carbine, it is not entirely uncommon to come across rifles customized down to their more rare counterpart. This rifle is a representation of early, quality Marlin manufacturing. With a more than decent bore, much of its original metal finish, and strong mechanics, it will make a great addition to a Marlin or lever-action rifle collection.
