Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a "V"-notch integral to the topstrap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered hard rubber with rampant colt in oval at their tops. The inside of the grips are scribed with non-matching numbers. The bolsters around the screw escutcheons are irregular on the exterior, showing minor cracking on the interior. The grips show fairly even handling wear with some nicks and scratches. There is a spot of compressed checkers on the left panel below the screw. The right panel has a patch of re-cut checkers on the rear edge. The checkering is otherwise well defined. There are a few tiny losses around the edges. Overall, the grips are in Good-plus condition as not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished, numbered parts match.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with well defined rifling. There is light erosion and pitting scattered through the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates about 6/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 20% of its current metal finish. Finish remains mostly in protected areas and around raised features. There is some case color remaining on the hammer. Other surfaces have gone to a light-moderate patina, lighter on the barrel. There are some scattered light nicks and scratches. There is some minor surface oxidation and infrequent erosion. The action shows operational wear including turn-wear on the cylinder. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings range from clear to worn and incomplete. Overall, this revolver is in Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this revolver. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be required to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Colt’s Single Action Army is, perhaps more than any other, an iconic American pistol. It was the U.S. issue sidearm for the last two decades of the 19th century, used by pioneers, outlaws and lawmen across the expanding nation, and captivated audiences on the silver screen and television, and still does. Produced for nearly a century and a half, they are still being made, today! This example is a 1st Generation Single Action Army made in 1900. The revolver is chambered for the classic .38-40 Winchester cartridge, which would make it a nice companion for a lever action carbine chambered for the same round. It is in Good condition as refinished, retaining some of its new blue finish and with strong mechanics. Any 1st Generation SAA would make a great addition to a Colt collection, and this late 19th Century example should be no exception. Please see our photos and good luck!
